The statue was commissioned in the 80's along with another drummer statue for the HAC. The then 'Colonel of the Royal Drums' was a part of the project team giving his expert guidance as to how the statue should look. The statue is modelled on the style of the New Model Army with a simple uniform and drum; Cromwellian simplicity rather than the glitter of the Royalist Armies and their elaborate uniforms.
