Mountain Climber Ref: CLIMB

This figure has been created from an idea based upon two well known Lakeland Pioneers from the past, Walter Parry Haskett-Smith and Owen Glynne Jones. The idea to create such a piece of sculpture came from a young mountain climber born in the Lake District and who climbed in the footsteps of these two great men. He felt strongly that we would do well to remember such adventurers and continue to capture their strengths and their example.

This sculpture depicts a young climber such as the 'Only Genuine Jones' who together with Walter Parry Haskett-Smith put aside their fell walking shoes and replaced them with crude leather climbing boots, took up ice picks and long lengths of hemp rope and began to climb the teasing rocks and craggy mountains of the Lake District in Northern England. Their clothes are typical of the period, simply a tweed Norfolk jacket with cloth cap, thick stockings and 'plus fours'.
